This month, we focused on helping students who struggle with food insecurity.
We donated to the Student Cupboard at California State University, Fresno – our CEO Krystal Kitahara’s alma mater.
Our donation contributed more than 5,000 pounds of bread and more than 2,600 pounds of canned goods.
A recent graduate highlighted its importance. She says, “There were times when a bag of groceries from the Student Cupboard helped me get through to my next paycheck. I am so grateful.”
Unfortunately, making ends meet can be challenging for many students. In a 2017 study, 43.7% of Fresno State students surveyed have experienced some level of food insecurity in the past year. Studies show that when a student is hungry, it is very difficult to think and retain knowledge.
The Fresno State Student Cupboard was established five years ago to provide free food and hygiene products for struggling students in a dignified way. During the last academic year, it helped 6,073 students during 57,265 visits.
Added bonus – Central California businesses stepped up and matched each donation, raising more than $150,000 total. What a great success story and we’re proud to be a part of it.
